01 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

One regional name. Different hunt areas.

San Juan is a useful regional starting point, but it is not one interchangeable permit for every species. DWR’s elk plan distinguishes San Juan Bull Elk from San Juan, Montezuma Canyon. Deer and sheep opportunities also require their own specific hunt names and boundaries. A San Juan Elk Ridge deer permit should never be interpreted using an elk-unit description.

02 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Choose the hunt that fits your tag.

For deer and elk, provide the hunt number, weapon and dates. For bear and mountain lion, discuss the intended hunt and current species-specific rules with the team. For pronghorn or desert sheep, send the complete permit name rather than only saying San Juan. Desert sheep guiding is confirmed for the region, but individual subunit coverage must be confirmed directly for your inquiry; this page does not claim every San Juan sheep subunit.

03 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Check access close to departure.

The San Juan region includes varied ownership and separate access rules. Use the exact DWR Hunt Planner boundary, then check the applicable land manager’s current roads and closures. Review DWR’s wildfire information when planning fall travel. Conditions can change after a tag is drawn, so a route selected months earlier needs a final check before you travel or book a meeting point.

04 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Turn the inquiry into a field plan.

Tell Black Timber how many people are coming, how many days you have and what kind of daily effort works for the group. Ask how the proposed hunt balances travel, walking and glassing or other species-appropriate activity. Request written details on guide ratio, lodging, meals, transportation and retrieval. Discuss realistic expectations without assuming that a past photograph predicts the animal or conditions you will encounter.

05 / BEFORE YOU BOOK

San Juan hunt questions

Does Black Timber guide mountain goats in San Juan? The confirmed mountain-goat area is La Sal, not San Juan. Does this page include Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep? The sheep offering confirmed here is desert bighorn. Is this the San Juan National Forest in Colorado? No—this page covers Utah hunts; Black Timber’s Colorado offering is mountain lion hunting. Which permit details matter? The full species, hunt name, number, weapon and dates.
