A Paunsaugunt hunt starts with knowing exactly which opportunity you hold. Black Timber guides mule deer and elk here, but the two species call for different permit conversations and expectations.

01 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Deer country. A separate elk opportunity.

Paunsaugunt is the correct spelling. Utah DWR identifies this southern Utah management area as Unit 27, in Garfield and Kane counties. Its management plan prioritizes premium mule deer while describing a general-season any-bull strategy for elk. The area’s deer reputation should not be used as a shortcut for describing its elk hunts. Start with the species and full permit name before comparing guided options.

02 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Make the permit the starting point.

For a deer inquiry, send the full hunt name, hunt number, weapon and dates. For elk, identify whether your permit is for a bull or antlerless animal and the exact area it covers. A deer permit does not create an elk opportunity, and a familiar unit name does not mean every weapon or season is available. Use the current Utah Hunt Planner and guidebook to verify your own hunt; the unit management plan describes long-term management, not your legal season.

03 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

Plan around country and access.

The Paunsaugunt includes a mixture of Forest Service, BLM, state and private land. Its management boundary excludes national parks and Native American trust lands. Discuss the proposed hunting area and lawful access before choosing lodging. A nearby attraction or a public road on a regional map is not proof that the ground beyond it is open to hunting. Ask how the plan changes if weather affects roads or walking conditions.

04 / PLAN YOUR HUNT

What to discuss with your guide.

Explain your walking comfort, the time you can spend in the field and the experience of anyone coming with you. For deer, discuss glassing, evaluating bucks and the patience you are comfortable bringing to a hunt. For elk, discuss the specific permit and realistic daily approach rather than assuming it will resemble a limited-entry bull hunt elsewhere. Ask for the guide ratio, travel arrangements, lodging, meals and retrieval responsibilities in writing.

05 / BEFORE YOU BOOK

Paunsaugunt hunt questions

Does Black Timber guide both species? Yes—mule deer and elk are confirmed offerings. Does that mean both can be hunted on one permit? No; each opportunity depends on the applicable permit and rules. Can we arrange travel before discussing the tag? Send the permit details first so the team can confirm the scope and proposed meeting arrangements before you commit to separate reservations.
